Hello and Welcome Back,
It has been quiet here for almost two years. I worked and observed the situation here in the country. It all started with student protests in 2019. Which went more or less calmly. At the beginning of April 2021, President Duque announced a new tax reform and that was another trigger for violent protests across the country. Young people in particular took to the streets and demonstrated against this reform.
Protesters today argue that the new plan does not contain enough for education and job creation. "The protests continue because President Duque has not solved any of the problems faced by Colombian society," said the president of a union, Francisco Maltes.
Colombia suffers from violence, poverty and great social inequality. The unemployment rate reached 15.6 percent in May, a total of 3.8 million people were unemployed. Young people in particular have the feeling that they have no future.
Now a German tourist was expelled for taking part in anti-government demonstrations. The German regularly posted photos and videos of protests in the city of Cali on online networks.
On Friday, she wrote on Facebook that she was the victim of an attack in the city. The attacker fired "until his weapon ran out of ammunition". A friend who protected her suffered "13 gunshot wounds all over her body, including three in the head and several in the chest," the 34-year-old described. The authorities did not confirm the attack. Cali is considered the center of the protests. Germany's ambassador Peter Ptassek recently said on Twitter that he was observing the situation "with concern". Contact was made with Rebecca S.!
I will let you know in the next few days how things will continue and what others have to say about it
